Bunkasai at Auckland Museum
“Bunkasai at Auckland Museum. Each year, schools in Japan hold Bunkasai – a festival of Japanese culture. We invite students studying Japanese language, and their teachers, to take part in the Museum’s own Japanese cultural festival.
Our Learning Lab is set up Bunkasai style – adorned with Japanese cultural objects. Students are welcomed to the programme by the thundering sounds of the taiko drums and our educators attired in festival happi.
Japanese guest educators will guide students through cultural activities, tailored to practise students’ written and spoken Japanese. Using authentic materials, students will take part in activities both traditional and contemporary. In the process of learning, students will create materials to take away with them.
This classroom experience is combined with an interactive audio gallery tour which looks at the representation of Japan in the Museum’s collections. The tour takes students from modern Japanese couture fashion to Samurai armour, huge temple hangings to tiny Netsuke. The tour is available in a combination of English and varying levels of Japanese, depending on the ability of individual students. If you are unable to visit the Museum, you can still access the podcast and resources via our website http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/906/bunkasai
