Auckland the Taste of Japan 2007
The NZ Japan Society of Auckland with the support of the Consulate General of Japan and the Auckland Museum is hosting “Taste of Japan” on September 8th and 9th at the Auckland Museum. This event will introduce various aspects of Japanese culture under the theme, “Paper”, such as shodo calligraphy, origami paper folding and washi paper craft works. This event offers Aucklanders a chance to experience Japanese arts and culture through displays, workshops and entertainment. One of the main features this year is local Origami Master Jonathan Baxter’s origami design in the foyer of the museum to welcome visitors through an awesome mobile hanging display of Japanese origami art. We will also have a Shodo Master, Mr. Kohara from Japan to demonstrate the art of beautiful writing. The shodo works by Kohara sensei’s students in Japan as well as the high school students in Auckland who entered the essay and shodo competition will be displayed. Various workshops will be held where visitors can have hands-on experience of making art works using paper, such as origami, kirie (cut paper craft) and shodo. Cultural performances by invited local performers and artists from Japan including Kimono show, a Shakuhachi and a Taiko drumming concert will also entertain visitors.
More information will be available here.
